Use it for that and it's perfect. Like any softshell it does not repel steady rain. On snow, it will compliment and protect your under layers, one of which should be windproof, keep out draft and snow, and sort of "pull it all together". Do you have a winter jacket that's warm but is a little too short, or has no hood? This fixes it. Huge glove pockets and a lined hood complete the package.
I'm 6'3" 190 lbs and the L fits great. It is long in sleeve and body, cinches down, covers everything, like a techie "hoody". It breathes and keeps out spindrift. I can cram a puffy jacket under it in a pinch, but it's better with layered vest, windshirt, windbloc fleece etc. Downhill and XC skis especially good, and ice climbs like a gymnast although it will wet out in bad, drippy conditions. However, it dries on your body with exertion. Great jacket if you need a specialty piece.

And that's what the doctor prescribed since it's not very warm. Neither it's very water resistant. Ventilation is excellent and the hood very useful. The pockets are slightly higher than in most soft shells allowing for a backpack belt. The bottom line, the design has more desirable features than most other soft shells.
