I live at 8,300', in the Colorado foothills, with USFS on two sides of my property. In other words, my backyard is what most would call backcountry. During the winter, I wear heavier, stiffer boots than these.
I was quite pleased with the stability of the sole. Most lightweight hikers have floppy soles. It took me a couple of wearings to figure out that they do not have to be laced very tightly. Guess I've been wearing heavy, technical boots too long. I would definitely recommend them for day hikes, as long as you aren't carrying a heavy pack.
I'm 6'3" and weigh 230 lbs, so I'm probably more sensitive to stiffness, support and stability issues than most. I'll wear out a flimsy pair of boots in six weeks. These should last me through at least one summer, if not two.
