2nds. Own one of Dan Whestone's sharpening stones handsomely packaged in an aromatic cedar box. In the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas lie the nearly pure silica rock formations known as Novaculite, a compact, quartzose rock deriving its name from "Novacula", a Latin word meaning "sharp knife". This natural Arkansas stone has a crystalline structure of individual quartz grains with voids and exposures of crystalline edges that enhance the sharpening ability of this natural abrasive. Use with honing oil to keep your stone free of shavings that can clog the pores of the stone and make it less effective. Translucent Arkansas stoneExtra fine gradeFinest grade abrasive stone available today; considered surgical gradeCommonly used in industrial applications where an extremely fine polish is requiredSize: 4x2x½"Weight: 6.6 oz.2nds, minor surface blemishes. A Really Top Quality Stone

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
I'm a wood carver. Anything less than "scary sharp" is unacceptable. To achieve and maintain the kind of edge I need takes a particularly hard stone. I found the "Translucent Arkansas" to be the equivalent of imported stones that I'd paid six to eight times as much for.
It is listed as a visual "2nd"... that didn't impair its use or value at all.

Comments: I've needed a new whetstone for a while. This is a really nice one at a discounted price. The cedar box lends a nice touch.
