Alico Summits, great all around classic By Northwest hiker from Seattle, Wa on 08/12/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Everyday, Harsh Terrain, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: A great all around traditional mid-weight hiking boot. These are the classic hiking boots you may or may not remember from the 70's-80's. Before the current high-tech gortext/synthetic/plastic boots there where the all leather Raichle's and Alico's. Big stiff, heavy but tough as nails and lasted forever. I destroy the synthetic boots in a season and they offer almost no real support. Also they are hot and don't breath and the high tech water proofing is not all it's cracked up to be. The Summits with a good coating of Sno-seal are completely dry and leather seems to breath better than synthetic frabrics. I have both the Alico Summits and the heavier Guides and love them both. The Summits are so comfortable that I wear them as everyday boots. Good for walking and up to medium backpacking work. They offer decent support and they wear like iron. My first pair are going on 6 years old and have about a million miles on them. I just bought another pair for backups and also a set of the Guides for heavy backpacking/clinbing. I highly recommend Alico boots for anyone wanting an honest pair of hard working trail boots cast in the traditional, all leather European hiking boot mold.
By Woodboogah from Maine mountains on 08/07/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Cons: Stitching comes apart Best Uses: Everyday, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Professional/Guide, Woodsman trail builder Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These boots are great ... I've bought two pairs. However, on both left boots the stitching has come apart in the lower part of the laces. I wear them daily, mid April > snowfall for hiking and work, but the stitching should hold up better.
By Hiker Jeff from Billings, MT on 08/05/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Fits my fat foot, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Well I finally found a pair of boots that doesn't give me blisters or foot pain. Usually, my feet really start to hurt after about six miles, not so with these. I recently took them on a 12 mile day hike in the Beartooth mountains and didn't have a single blister when I was done. Did a little mountain climbing in them in the Boulder mountains last weekend and found them to be a good sturdy boot with good traction. They are a bit bulky so you have to be careful with your footholds. Also scrambling through the talus and shale scuffed them up a bit (as would be the case with any all leather boot) but a treatment afterward with Obenauf's heavy duty LP seemed to take care of most of the scuffs. I Have found them to be completely water proof after treating them with the Obenhauf's. I never hiked in them before treating them so I can't say how they do out of the box. I'm taking them backpacking on the 26 mile East Rosebud trail in a couple of weeks I'll check back after that and let you know how they did. By PS from VA on 08/04/2008 Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: My normal shoe size is a 12. The length of these boots was too short, and I had to return them because they would have cramped my toes. I wish I could have kept them, as they were a well made boot.
Great comfort, but they fell apart By Ubergoober from Pacific Northwest. on 08/04/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Comfortable/No Break-In Cons: Not Durable/ Wears Easily, Not Water Resistant, Squeak Best Uses: Everyday, Harsh Terrain Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational, Environmentalist Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: I wanted a boot I could both hike in and wear when working around sawmills. This boot was very comfortable right from the start, but the stitching pulled out on the uppers where the strip that holds the laces to the rest of the upper at the front of the boot. The stitches pulled out after about a year. First one shoe - I thought it was something I had caught it on, a root or something, but then the other boot went too, same spot. They remain comfortable, but I can't use them for activities that require waterproof.
Two facts to consider: First, I used Hubbard's shoe grease on them. I've used it on other boots, no problem, but I can't swear this didn't create the problem by damaging the stitching. Second, I also use these for work boots. I do computer work in sawmills - while my job isn't extraordinarily demanding on these boots, there are those times when I'm climbing over steel equipment, etc. So take this rating with a grain of salt. I think I'm going to try a second pair, in the off-chance my experience is a fluke, because I really, really liked the comfort factor while hiking everything from rocky volcanic trails to Pacific Rainforest. I'll get back to you in another 4 years.
These are UK sizes, not American By Elliot from Cary, NC on 08/04/2008 Pros: Arch Support, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer, Casual/Recreational Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These boots are fantastically crafted, as almost everyone else has noted. Just beware when you order, though, that the sizes listed are not US sizes. I ordered a size 13 initially and when they arrived they seemed a big (a lot) roomy. I removed the insole to see if I could use a thicker one (which I recommend anyway) and the Alico 13 maps to a Euro 48... which would be a US 14. I recommend that unless you know otherwise, to order a size smaller than you normally would. That said, I exchanged mine for a 12 and couldn't be happier. I am looking forward to these boots lasting through many years of adventuring.
A $200+ SEWN SOLE HKG BOOT By EVERYDAYWEAR from NEW MEXICO on 07/26/2008 Pros: "RESOLE-ABLE IN TOWN", Ankle Support, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Cons: THIN ARCH LINER, THIN VIBRAM SOLE Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Everyday, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: RIGHT FOOT BREAK-IN PROBLEM, LEATHER FOLD OCCURS OVER TOE, CLAMPING TOE BETWEEN TOP AND BOTTOM OF BOOT. NEVER HAD A BOOT FOLD THIS WAY.
Classic boots, break them in By trail traveler from Princeton, NJ on 07/07/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Great Traction Cons: No cusion in insoles, Not Water Resistant, Too Stiff/Not Flexible Best Uses: Day Hiking, Light Loads Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer, Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I use these for day hiking doing 8-12 miles with a 10-15 pound backpack. They are very well made and I like the fact that they don't have Gore-Tex. I've had terrible luck with boots lately, but these seem like keepers. For the full leather version, make sure you break them in *very* well before taking them on a major trip. I did not and developed heal blisters on a trip to Switzerland. Also, the stock insoles are terrible--no cushion or arch support--so plan on replacing them.
