Comments: My 8th grader chucked his backpack for this bag and loves it. He says it's much easier and more comfortable to carry his books/notebooks over his shoulder than on his back. He even likes the color and the wide, sturdy straps. Will be great for plane trips to put his laptop in for easy access at security check-point.

Probably better for to and from work (or school) use than a bike messenger bag. Being an Eagle Creek product, the Local Messenger should also be great for travel. It has plenty of pockets for organizing all of your stuff like a cell phone, pens, papers, etc. Mesh pockets on either side are handy for water bottles. Also included is a divider in the main compartment, a grab handle on the cover flap and a grippy, contoured shoulder pad. The back pocket has a bottom zipper which allow the bag to be secured to a rolling luggage handle.
The Local Messenger uses a zipper, a pair of squeeze-type clips and small Velcro patch to secure the main compartment and to keep the cover flap in place. Timbuk2 uses four large Velcro patches (and two clips) on their messenger bags which can be quite noisy when opened, but may be more convenient.
I've been using a Local Messenger for about a year and it shows no sign of wear. That and the many organizational features have made it an excellent everyday bag.
