I was using an 8wt.WF line and it could hold 60' in the air, no sweat! I've been fly fishing for steelhead for about 35 years. I previously used Sage and Loomis 10' rods, so I know a good rod when I cast one. I needed a travel rod (ever try going through an airport with a 5' rod case?). I was knocked out by this rod's performance. I was fishing the N. Umpqua with a friend who was casting a 2 hand rod and, while I couldn't cast as far I certainly was able to cover all the water I wanted to. Excellent rod!

I quickly discovered that this rod functions best when you go up one line weight; in other words, I fished a 7WFF line. Once I changed to the 7w line, the rod cast admirably and handled large rainbows quite well. I'm thinking of purchasing the 5w to use with 6w line. It's a stiff rod (which I like) and for me, cast everything from weighted leeches to nymphs very well.

Perfect for reaching into that hole that is just out of reach of your 9ft.

a sleeper of a rod, buy it now ! By aaron from upstate ny on 01/03/2008 Pros: Accurate Casting, Easy To Transport, Good Tip Action, Sensitive Best Uses: Fly Fishing, Large Fish, River Fishing, Small Fish Describe Yourself: Avid Fisher Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: So far, this rod has proven itself whether casting to spooky carp on the lake flats or nymphing a spring creek. At first glance a 10' 4wt seems an odd combo and I was concerned I would be casting a buggy whip...prayers answered! This rod is no whip nor is it some club med-fast with a sensitive yet forgiving tip perfect for high-sticking to selective trout. The reel seat is pretty as is the cork, my only complaint is that the reel seat did not accomidate the reel as smoothly as I would have liked requireing me to do a little reel modification.
This rod casts extremely well when underlined with a wf3wt. Great deal on a well crafted rod
