Only problem is that there is no zipper and the wool plaid lining is somewhat itchy. Other than that very nice coat.
One More Time: THIS IS A GREAT COAT By Kaatskills Kate from Town and country on 09/07/2008 Chest Size: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: THis is my second post... I bought this coat a year ago, and reviewed it in the early fall, because I'd had some experience already with the line -- I was constantly borrowing my husband's Gloverall (to walk the dog in lousy weather) before I bought one for myself. After an unusually long northeast winter, I'm giving this coat one more star and I'd like to answer some of the comments made by other reviewers -- particularly the lady from Arkansas who thought she'd freeze if she wore the coat on a trip to NYC, because it appears to be without a lining. (It's double-faced wool, but people aren't used to seeing this anymore, and may not know its merit.)
I split my time between Cooperstown NY and Manhattan. In Cooperstown, the temperature hovers between ten and 20-degrees F, from January through March. I wear this coat, on its own, beginning late October. It's cut big, as other reviewers have noted, so that you can layer, as the temperature plunges. This coat has seen me all the way through the worst of Cooperstown weather, with its bitter winds and icy cold. True, there is no inner zipper, when the toggles are buttoned, I am snug as can be. In fact, with mild exercise in freezing weather ( I'm talking about walking the dog)I loosen my scarf and open the top toggle. It's that warm. I also wear the coat commuting. It's cut just right, for sliding in and out of seats. On the minus side -- it's not waterproof, but you don't buy this coat to wear in a downpour. Anybody who lives in a rugged climate has a wardrobe of outerwear for different weather conditions, you can't expect one coat to do everything. That said, the tight woolen weave is excellent at shedding moisture and snowfall ... more than once, I've been caught in the rain, or heavy snow, wearing this coat, and it performed to expectations. I was dry, and the coat was no worse for the wear. So for people without experience of classic duffel-coat construction, yeah, you're right -- out of the bag, the coat looks like it won't work. But try it, live with it. There's a reason the British have been making these in exactly the same way for over a hundred years. I wish I could think of an excuse to buy another, in a different color, but there's no need. My mint green beauty will never wear out.
By Mere from Boston, MA on 08/06/2008 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable, Warm Cons: There is no inner zipper Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: a nice looking coat.... heavy, warm fabric but there is no inner zipper to fasten for protection against wind and cold.
Fastened with toggle closures only.
exactly what I was looking for. By sewfor grands from south carolina on 05/04/2008 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable, Warm Best Uses: Casual Wear, Going Out, Office, Travel Describe Yourself: Classic, Comfort-oriented, Practical Chest Size: Feels true to size Length: Feels true to length Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: medium weight coat, that is not too short, that it bunches up when you get in a car. not too long either. has a hood attached, not buttoned. sleeve ends are "plain" no buttons or cuffs to catch on things. roomy enough to accomodate layering, I am delighted with it.
Everything I hoped for in a winter coat By Debragena from Lorton, VA on 02/12/2008 Pros: Attractive Design, Classic design, Comfortable, Durable, Quality construction, Warm Best Uses: Casual Wear, Going Out, Office, Travel Describe Yourself: Comfort-oriented, Conservative, Practical, Stylish Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I should have bought this coat sooner. It is everything I wanted in a winter coat. The fit is perfect and I appreciate the fine details in the construction such as the finished seam edges, the plaid lining, and the neck tab. Have worn in 40F down to 18F weather and it has kept me toasty warm, even with a biting wind and blowing rain/sleet/snow. The hood stays up even when walking into the wind. Goes with formal or casual wear. I LOVE this coat.
By NYC-Brit country artist from Midwestern university town on 12/25/2007 Pros: A feel-good coat, Attractive Design, Classic British duffle, Comfortable, Durable, Versatile, Warm Best Uses: Allows layers wo bulk, Casual Wear, Going Out, Office, Office Meetings, Travel Describe Yourself: Comfort-oriented, High-end shopper, Practical, Stylish, Urbane arty not faddish Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Excellent cut. Layers well, even over a blazer, but doesn't look bulky.
Yet its cut and drape are such that it looks fine over a shirt or light sweater.
Looks great worn open in warmer weather.
Wonderful red plaid lining (in the dark red coat).
Nice rich wool fabric that doesn't wrinkle.
Putting on this coat makes me feel happy.
The genuine horn buttons and leather toggles make buttoning and unbuttoning easy with gloves.
By SnapRolls from Xenia OH on 12/18/2007 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable, Warm Best Uses: Casual Wear, Office, Travel Describe Yourself: Comfort-oriented, Conservative, Practical Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Nice duffle coat. I wish it had slightly more room through the hips for layering winter items (and that is what brought it down to 4 stars).
The wool is nice and soft and warm. The hood is permanently attached and useful. The horn buttons work well. The pockets are nice and deep and the flaps function well without getting in the way or getting stuck in the pocket.
By Peg from Cheshire, CT on 12/15/2007 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable, Durable, Warm Describe Yourself: Comfort-oriented, High-end shopper, Practical Sleeve Length: Feels too long Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: It's a beautifully made coat, but the sizing is bizarre (still being made to fit British sailors in bulky uniforms, perhaps). I bought a 36 for my daughter. She normally wears a US 12. She could fit another person in the coat! I wear a US 16; it's too big for me too. Unless I can find someone whom it fits, I'll be returning it. I love the coat and would recommend it with a warning about the sizing. Order at least 2 sizes smaller.
High quality but not for cold weather By Orangknitter from Reno, Nevada on 12/14/2007 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable, Durable Best Uses: Casual Wear, Travel Describe Yourself: Practical Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: I like this garment but I had to return it because it does not keep me warm on a freezing day. The wool is very thin. ALSO, [...] description IS NOT ACCURATE. The toggles are not horn as described but plastic, as well as the frogging is not leather but plastic also.
By Young-at-Heart from West Lebanon, NH on 12/07/2007 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable, Durable, Needs zipper to be warmer, Warm Best Uses: Casual Wear, Travel Describe Yourself: Comfort-oriented, Practical, Trendy Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I use the coat on cold and windy days, when I need to look a little more stylish than in a parka.
I wish, however, it would have a zipper, it would make the coat even warmer - and also faster to close.
