odor is bad, but product is good value By simplyshawn from Berkshires on 03/12/2010 Best Uses: Spring/Fall, Winter Describe Yourself: Budget Shopper Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These blankets are a good value but don't expect softness. They are mid-weight, rather coarse wool -- great for over your knees at a football game, for the car, or for twin beds in a seldom-used guest room, which is why I bought them. They arrived in perfect condition, but did have the strong mothball odor others complained about. Four or more days in strong wind out on my porch railing this late winter has removed most of the smell, so I folded them and put them in the guest room. I opened the door to this room the next day and the odor nearly knocked me out. It's still quite strong. As soon as the warmer weather arrives, out they will go again for additional airing. Otherwise, to the laundromat for a cold-wash cycle in the large machine.
By suzla from Mountains of California on 03/02/2010 Pros: Heavy wool great quality Describe Yourself: Budget Shopper Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: The mothball smell is very offensive, took a week to air out the basement where I washed them. But, once they were clean, they just smelled like nice wool. The color is not brown as described. Maybe they ran out of that color. It is more of a dark khaki color with a single wide stripe at either end which is not as white or distinct as in the picture. I hoped to hang these for curtains but the color was wrong and they are extremely heavy, which is terrific for blankets but not for curtains. I love the blankets as I love natural wool and am something of a blanket collector. Just wish they had been a nicer brown with white stripes.
By TMH from Asheville NC on 02/23/2010 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable Describe Yourself: Budget Shopper Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I like this blanket because it is made of natural
wool vs all the synthetic blankets. I like the color
and the weight of the blanket.
Fantastic Camping Blanket By CatskillCamper from New York on 02/17/2010 Pros: Comfortable, Durable, WARM, Well made Best Uses: Can be used all year Describe Yourself: Budget Shopper Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This blanket is as tough as you are. It will keep you warm in the winter with a tarp if you know how to use it, and in summer it's a breeze. They don't really make them like this anymore. I couldn't stay warm blanket camping in the Adirondacks with the blankets currently on the market because they're made for beds, not for the wild. This one's made for the outdoors.
By John from Detroit, MI on 02/15/2010 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable Best Uses: Spring/Fall, Summer, Winter, Year-round Describe Yourself: Budget Shopper Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I tried to get rid of the smell by hanging it outside for a week. No luck. So, I laid it out over the snow and buried it. I pulled the frozen blanket out a week later, hung it up for another day, then brought it in to dry by the heater. The smell is now gone and I didn't have to wash it or have it professionally cleaned.
Doused in naphthalene, doused again By Head Case from north of Antarctica on 02/07/2010 Cons: Difficult to Clean, Not usable Best Uses: Spring/Fall, Winter, Year-round Describe Yourself: Budget Shopper Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: The naphthalene stench is atrocious. Don't attempt to wash this sucker.
While it is one tough little army blanket, it will not be useful this winter, because it will be airing out for the remainder of the 2010 cold season.
The scent will dissipate in the sun, but it is going to take quite some time to get most of the nauseating smell out. After being around this thing for 10 minutes, I had a massive headache.
I honestly think mine was dipped in liquid naphthalene, and then dumped in a naphthalene pit for several years.
From the reviews I've read, I think it is a real turkey shoot as to whether you get a massively stinky or just slighty stenchy blanket.
I've got one of the massively stinky ones. Ick!
By Katie from Indiana on 02/04/2010 Pros: Attractive Design, Sturdy, Tough Describe Yourself: Budget Shopper Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Nice and thick, as stated. We plan to use the two blankets I ordered for camping and keeping in the car for emergencies. They will be perfect. Not soft, but sturdy and a bit scratchy, as tough wool blankets usually are. I believe these blankets will be passed on to my children . . . About the smell, they do smell of moth balls, but not ridiculously as some have found. They are airing out in my basement and after a week you can only smell the mothball smell if you put your nose up to them. I'd rather them have some residual scent than attract moths in the off season. Overall the smell won't bother us. I haven't gotten them wet at all. Such a great price.

By Red Dog from Mosely, VA on 01/13/2010 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable, High Quality Best Uses: Spring/Fall, Winter Describe Yourself: Budget Shopper Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I read all the comments, and then steeled myself for some smelly blankets because I really wanted some high quality wool blankets. Mine arrived in great shape with just a hint of chemical odor. I am very happy with my purchase and glad I took the chance.
