I agree w/ other review. These shoes feel tight out of the box. I wear 9D Al-Ed shoes almost exclusively, and normally don't have a problem like this. I am fortunate enough to have a store nearby where I was able to try a 9E, and surprisingly they are too wide - so I stuck w/ 9D.
The good news is, if you give them some time (i.e. 2-3 days of wear without much walking), they do start to break and they are great. However, it is a lot of pain to get there. You should either be ready to suck it up or use shoe stretchers to ease the effort. Otherwise, buy a size wider but you may be disappointed.

Comments: Am I unlucky or what? The shoes that I bought were way too narrow in total girth. My guts feeling is that someone at AE factory made a mistake. The pairs that I got should have been a C/D rather than an E in width. I tried them on at home several times during different times of the day for about 30 minutes each. They were just unbearable. I have been wearing AE shoes for more than ten years and never had problems like this. These pairs are of good quality and taste as AE shoes usually are. I reluctantly returned these shoes for a refund.
